To provide the knowledge and understanding of current water main specification and construction practise. The course covers all aspects from specify materials through to commissioning of the main.

Objectives

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of currently available pipeline materials
  • Describe the situations applicable to the use if particular pipe materials
  • Describe methods of protecting pipelines from corrosion and other external influences
  • How to carry out basic structural design of pipeline
  • Describe the practical implications of installing water mains across various terrain and obstacles including the environmental impact of such schemes
  • Outline alternatives to traditional methods of trench excavation and support
  • Explain how to detail pipe schemes with respect to valve arrangements, pipe anchorage and beddings
  • Describe the process of commissioning pipelines
  • Specify typical components of large diameter pipelines
