This training course is aimed at water industry technicians requiring the necessary skills and knowledge to clean water mains by flushing, air scouring or swabbing.

Objectives

By the end of this training course the participants will be able to:

  • Describe the different causes of discoloured water
  • Explain the advantages and disadvantages of the available cleansing techniques
  • Select the appropriate mains cleansing technique to address a range of mains discolouration situations
  • Select suitable tools and equipment appropriate to each activity and carryout pre-use operational checks
  • Identify suitable flushing points for the main requiring attention
  • Identify suitable points to insert and remove swabs
  • Create a schedule of operations that will ensure selected zone is thoroughly flushed or air scoured
  • Assess the risks associated with cleansing operations and put in place controls to minimise them
  • Explain the considerations required with regard to flow, pressure and velocity of water in relation to each activity
  • Describe the potential effects of operations on customers and the necessary communications required
  • Carry out all operations safely and hygienically
Method

The course will consist of a mixture of classroom based tuition and practical exercises.
