This course provides managers of water distribution networks with the knowledge required to ensure that they have everything in place to ensure appropriate response to contamination incidents.

Objectives

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

  • State the requirements of the 'Principles of Water Supply Hygiene Technical Guidance Notes' with regard to disinfection of water mains
  • Identify the network operations required to isolate mains requiring disinfection
  • Recognise the impact of activities on customer service standards and take the necessary actions to control and minimise their effect
  • Specify the resources required to carry out an emergency disinfection exercise
  • State the operational pre-use checks required on materials and equipment prior to disinfection
  • Carry out calculations to determine the times and volumes involved in the disinfection process
  • State the measurements, checks and the sampling required to indicate and confirm success or failure of disinfections process
  • Identify the network operations required to return mains to their normal operational modes
Method

The course is classroom based and will consist of trainer led activities and desk top exercises.

Learners should be familiar with water distribution networks and the contamination hazards associated with them.
