Safe Operation of Anaerobic Digesters
This is a two day course covering the following topics:
- Process description - conventional anaerobic digesters plus pre-treatment processes
- Reasons for digesting
- Digester construction - the role of key plant and equipment
- The role of the operator and manager - HACCP, operational procedures, process monitoring
- Factors affecting the process - operational problems and restoring stability
- Gas storage and utilisation - CHP
- Hazards associated with digesters and control measures employed
- Odour management
- Commissioning and decommissioning procedures
The focus throughout the two days is on maintaining a safe working environment.
Objectives
- Describe the process including routine operations and maintenance
- Recognise and resolve operational problems
- Maximise and maintain methane gas production
- Identify hazards associated with anaerobic digesters and list the relevant control measures
- Follow commissioning and de-commissioning procedures
Method
A classroom based training course with a mixture of trainer presentation, practical exercises, site visit and end of course assessment.

Learners are required to bring their own PPE
