Water Industry Information and Guidance Note IGN 4-01-03 Issue 2 has recently been published. This sets out the most up to date guidance for water professionals and has been prepared with the benefit of experience gained from the original note.

One of the main reasons for the refurbishment of water distribution, transmission and sewer pressure pipelines is to replace and renovate pipes with unacceptable leakage levels. It is vital that new pipelines are fit for purpose and are as leak-free as possible. BS EN 805 gives advice on different test methods that may be used to assess newly laid pipelines for leakage.

These methods aren’t mandatory; it is left to the Engineer / Client to choose the most appropriate procedure, but it has been decided to adopt one procedure to test all new PE and PVC water and sewerage pressure pipelines laid in the U.K. and another method for ductile iron, steel and GRP pressure pipelines.

IGN 4-01-03 Issue 2

The Information and Guidance Note (IGN) was originally published in March 2011 and has been extensively adopted by the UK Water Industry and its contractors, but was limited in the range of pipe diameters and SDRs it covered and required updating. The pipe diameter range now goes up to 1200mm for PE100 materials, the number of SDRs has increased and PE80 materials removed.

Merit Skills has incorporated this latest guidance in two updated training courses:

WS-8 Commissioning of Water Mains course provides the skills and knowledge required to carry out hydrostatic pressure testing activities on water distribution systems in accordance with BS EN 805:2000 / IGN 4-01-03 Issue 2 and cleansing & disinfection of new mains in accordance with Principles of Water Supply Hygiene & Technical Guidance Notes.

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

  • State the requirements of BS EN 805: 2000 / IGN 4-01-03 Issue 2
  • State the differences between pressure tests for rigid and elastomeric pipelines
  • Calculate and interpret test results for rigid & elastomeric pipelines
  • Disinfect new water mains in accordance with Principles of Water Supply Hygiene & Technical Guidance Notes
  • Cleanse new water mains in accordance with Principles of Water Supply Hygiene & Technical Guidance Notes
  • Measure Chlorine residuals and explain correct sampling procedures for new mains installations.

WS-9 Pressure Testing of Water Mains course provides the knowledge required to carry out hydrostatic pressure testing activities on water distribution systems in accordance with BS EN 805:2000 & IGN 4-01-03 Issue 2.

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

  • State the requirements of BS EN 805: 2000 / IGN 4-01-03 Issue 2
  • State the differences between pressure tests for rigid and elastomeric pipelines.
  • Carry out a pressure test on a rigid pipeline in accordance with BS EN 805:2000 / IGN 4-01-03 Issue 2
  • Carry out a pressure test on an elastomeric (PE) pipeline in accordance with BS EN 805:2000 / IGN 4-01-03 Issue 2.
  • Calculate and interpret test results for rigid & elastomeric pipelines
